Aadhaar helped Uttar Pradesh save Rs 8,000 crore in past 9 years

On an Average, theUttar Pradeshgovernment saved around Rs 895 crore annually and removed 8.7 lakh ghost beneficiaries in the last nine years with the help of Aadhaar.

The 12-digit individual identification number issued by Unique Identification Authority of India, which serves as proof of identity and proof of address for residents of India, was used by various government departments for the direct benefit scheme (DBT). The UIDAI facilitates identifying the beneficiaries with the help of face authentication or biometric such as thump print or retina scan.
According to exclusive data accessed from UP government, since the launch of DBT in 2013 the government with the help of aadhaar saved Rs 8,062.04 crore and omitted 79,08,682 ghost beneficiaries.

The Majority of ghost beneficiaries were removed by the Food and civil supplies department. A total of 55.51 lakh fake beneficiaries were removed which helped the department to save Rs 7,065.10 crore followed by the basic Education department which detected 17.31 lakh ghost beneficiaries and saved Rs 174.95 crore.
